San Rocco and the "Maru" Festival: a magical night in the heart of Salento

San Rocco and the “Maru” Festival: A Magical Night in the Heart of Salento

In the heart of Salento, away from the busy coastline but rich in authenticity, Torrepaduli, a small hamlet of Ruffano, becomes the stage for one of Southern Italy’s most fascinating and energetic folk celebrations: the Feast of San Rocco and the legendary Night of the “Maru.”

This unique event blends faith, tradition, music, dance, and mysticism, attracting thousands of visitors every year.

San Rocco: Devotion and Popular Faith

On August 15th and 16th, Torrepaduli celebrates its patron saint, San Rocco, traditionally known as the protector of pilgrims and the sick.

During these days, the village fills with pilgrims, processions, colorful lights, street vendors, and traditional food stands. The most emotional moment is the procession of the saint through the streets, accompanied by music, prayers, and a strong sense of community.

But the real magic begins during the night between August 15th and 16th.

The Night of the “Maru”: Pizzica, Challenge, and Trance

This is the famous Night of the Maru, one of the most authentic folk traditions of Salento.

In front of the small sanctuary of San Rocco, while the celebration continues around the village, musicians and tambourine players gather to start the hypnotic rhythm of pizzica scherma—an ancient ritual dance that symbolically recreates a duel.

Dancers face each other in the center of a circle formed by the crowd. Their movements are fast, intense, and theatrical. Hands replace knives, creating a symbolic fight guided by rhythm and instinct.

The circle tightens, the tambourines accelerate, and the atmosphere becomes almost hypnotic. It’s a powerful expression of ancient peasant culture where music, ritual, and identity merge into a unique collective experience.

An Authentic Experience in Salento

The Feast of San Rocco and the Night of the Maru are much more than religious celebrations. They are living expressions of Salento’s cultural identity, where tradition, music, and community come together.

You don’t need to be religious to feel the energy of this night. Curiosity and a desire to discover the true spirit of the region are enough.

The Perfect Plan: Sailing by Day, Tradition by Night

Imagine spending the day sailing along the Ionian coast of Salento, exploring hidden coves, swimming in crystal-clear waters, and relaxing under the sun.

Then, return to port in the late afternoon, take a refreshing shower at the marina or on board, and head inland to Torrepaduli to experience one of the most fascinating nights of Salento’s folklore.

It’s the perfect combination of sea and tradition, silence and rhythm—a truly unforgettable way to experience this land.
