First Time on a Sailboat? Captain’s Tips for a Smooth Experience
First Time on a Sailboat? Captain’s Tips for a Smooth and Stress-Free Experience
A day at sea, a sunset at anchor, the wind filling the sails, and the scent of salt in the air — a sailing trip is an experience you’ll never forget.
If it’s your first time on a sailboat, it’s natural to have questions: What should I bring? What should I wear? What’s best to eat before boarding?
No worries — here’s everything you need to know to enjoy your day on the water stress-free and fully prepared.
🧭 What to Wear on a Sailing Trip
The keyword is comfort. For a half-day or full-day sailing excursion in summer, bring:
Swimsuit
Beach towel
Sunglasses (preferably with a strap)
High SPF sunscreen
Hat or visor
Light windbreaker (wind can pick up quickly!)
Most guests go barefoot on deck, but if you prefer shoes, use clean deck shoes or sneakers with light-colored soles.
❌ Avoid high heels or dark/dirty soles that could mark the deck.
For spring or late summer trips, dress in layers: a windproof jacket plus light shirts or sweaters works best.
🍽️ Eating Before Sailing
To prevent seasickness, stick to light, dry foods before departure:
Dry toast or crackers
Plain cookies or rusks
Light fruit like apples or bananas
Avoid milk, heavy breakfasts, and excessive coffee if you’re not used to being on the water — they can be harder to digest.
🌊 Seasickness Tips
Most people adapt quickly to the boat’s gentle movement. But if it’s your first time, it’s smart to be prepared:
Bring Xamamina, Dramamine, or Scopoderm patches (apply at least 2 hours before boarding).
Anti-nausea wristbands can help in mild cases.
If you start feeling unwell, go outside, breathe fresh air, and focus on the horizon — it works wonders!
🧳 What to Pack for a Sailing Holiday
Whether it’s a weekend or a full week at sea, packing light is key:
Use soft bags or foldable backpacks (no hard suitcases).
Comfortable clothes for day and evening.
A warm layer or sweatshirt — it can get chilly at night.
Travel-sized toiletries and your own towel (towels are not provided).
Camera or smartphone to capture unforgettable moments.
USB stick if you want to copy photos from our onboard computer.
Bed linen is included (sheets, pillowcases, blankets).
We have a small hairdryer for use at the dock; high-powered appliances cannot be used while sailing due to power limits.
